The residential area behind William Adams Middle School was shut down Thursday afternoon for more than an hour as firefighters from Alice and Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco battled a two-story structure fire less than one block from the campus.

The call came in shortly after 1 p.m. when the Alice Fire Department arrived, the building, a combination apartment/storage unit off of Dickey Street, was engulfed in flames. A resident in the home, Richard Rivera, was taken by Guardian EMS to CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Alice for smoke inhalation, Alice Fire Marshal Patrick Thomas said.
