Wheelchair-bound woman carried from home by her son

The residential area behind William Adams Middle School was shut down Thursday afternoon for more than an hour as firefighters from Alice and Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco battled a two-story structure fire less than one block from the campus.
The call came in shortly after 1 p.m. when the Alice Fire Department arrived, the building, a combination apartment/storage unit off of Dickey Street, was engulfed in flames. A resident in the home, Richard Rivera, was taken by Guardian EMS to CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Alice for smoke inhalation, Alice Fire Marshal Patrick Thomas said.
